Targeted, Tailored Technical Assistance and Training (TTTT)

If your ILC has a budget of $1 million or less, we invite you to sign up today for a FREE seven-month program of targeted technical assistance, combined with individual consulting tailored to the needs of YOUR organization. This program is funded by the New York State Independent Living Council (NYSILC) and brought to you by NYAIL in partnership with Richard Male & Associates (RMA).

WHO NEEDS THIS PROGRAM?

Throughout New York State, small Independent Living Centers are providing peer-to-peer services and support for people with disabilities and making the philosophy of Independent Living a reality in their communities. They have decades of experience in providing the practical services and systems change advocacy that are the hallmark of Independent Living Centers. However, because of their small staffs, geographic locations, lack of funding for training and consulting, and the time pressures familiar to all grassroots nonprofits, they often do not have the necessary capacity to meet the challenges of New York State’s rapidly changing health and long-term care services and systems and other disability-related policies and programs.

To survive in today’s competitive climate, all nonprofits need:

  • A diversified and sustainable fund raising base made up of foundation and corporate grants, large and small individual donors, a variety of government grants and contracts, and an earned income stream. If your ILC is still uncomfortably dependent upon your VESID contract or other government dollars—this program is for you!

  • An understanding of their market or constituency —the number and demographics of the people who already use their services; the size of the unmet need or untapped market; and how the market for services may change over time. If your ILC needs help in gauging the unmet needs of your constituents and developing a plan to meet that need, this program is for you!

  • A long-term strategic plan that lays out step-by-step how to build the necessary financial resources, expand programming, reach out to un-served or under-served populations, and develop a strong governing board and a skilled staff. If you're so busy handling day-to-day problems that you can barely plan a month ahead, let alone two-three years, this program is for you!

  • A system for evaluating the impact of their services. Documentation of program outcomes is crucial for two main reasons: 1) to ensure that the program meets the needs of the people it serves; and 2) so that the organization can demonstrate to funders and the community in general, that it is doing a good job. If you want to better demonstrate the impact of your services, this program is for you!

WHAT DOES THIS COST?

The entire seven-month program is brought to you free of charge by NYAIL and NYSILC. To sign up, click here.

WHO CAN SIGN UP?

To provide individual support to the ILCs that need it most, but are least likely to have the resources, the program is limited to the 20 smallest centers, those with budgets of $1 million or less. If your budget exceeds $1 million, but you would still like to participate, we are happy to wait-list your application. If space is available in your region, you will be invited to participate. Please complete the application form, or contact NYAIL to discuss at info@ilny.org or (518) 465-4650.

MORE ABOUT THE TTTT PROGRAM

NYAIL and RMA have chosen this format as the closest possible to one-on-one consulting for centers needing in-depth assistance. Rather than offer it to just a handful of centers, this format allows us to assist up to 20 ILCs over an seven-month period. During feedback from the 2007 series of webinars, individual consulting, and the fund development training event, we consistently heard that there is no time to plan or to get out ahead of the ongoing day-to-day concerns.

By providing the tools and ongoing support for smaller centers to develop long-term plans for strengthening their organizations, they will be better positioned to take advantage of the other types of technical assistance available. They will have a stronger framework on which to build the individual skills of grant writing, marketing, board development, volunteer recruitment, etc.

Here's what you will come away with:

An understanding of the basics of strategic planning (which includes needs assessment, evaluation and fund raising) —you will take away a plan for carrying out the process in your organization. RMA will provide a detailed step-by-step how-to workbook (available in electronic format) and ongoing telephone coaching through the end of September. By participating in the program, you will come away with:

  • A resource development plan for a diversified and sustainable fund raising base made up of foundation and corporate grants, large and small individual donors, a variety of government grants and contracts, and an earned income stream.
  • An understanding of your market or constituency —the number and demographics of the people who already use your services; the size of the unmet need or untapped market; and how the market for services may change over time.

  • A long-term strategic plan that lays out step-by-step how to build the necessary financial resources, expand programming, reach out to un-served or under-served populations, and develop a strong governing board and a skilled staff.

  • A system for evaluating the impact of your services.

As a participating ILC you undertake to:

Bring at least two, and preferably three, staff (or staff and board members) to the workshop and arrange for these people to participate throughout the seven-month TA process.

In the months prior to the workshops, RMA staff will solicit input from you and your colleagues about your particular concerns and Richard Male will tailor the content of the workshop accordingly. Following the workshops, Richard Male and RMA staff will work by phone and email with you to ensure that the planning process is moving forward. RMA will review and advise on all completed plans and trouble-shoot any additional concerns.
